Crime Bulletin – Attempted Sexual Battery – Possibly Near Campus

Posted by cfender on 11/14/09

The FSU Police Department, in the interests of informing the FSU community, is forwarding a press release that was distributed by the Tallahassee Police Department. While the FSU Police Department does not have information that there is a link between this offense and FSU, we believe that this is important information to share so FSU students, faculty, and staff can make informed decisions regarding their safety. If you have any information concerning any activity or suspect information that may be associated with this offense, please contact the Tallahassee Police Department without delay at the phone number provided below.

November 13, 2009

This morning at approximately 5:25AM the Tallahassee Police Department responded to the Tallahassee Memorial Hospital in reference to an attempted sexual battery. Upon arrival officers learned that sometime prior to 5:00AM the victim had been attempting to walk home when she was attacked somewhere along West Tennessee Street. Two males exited a light or cream-colored newer model van, one armed with a knife, and attempted to sexually batter the victim. The victim fought off the suspects and received non-life threatening injuries.

Suspects:

W/M, early to mid twenties, 5′08 to 5′09”, close cut thin beard that outlined jaw,
and wearing white t-shirt and blue jeans
W/M, early to mid twenties, clean shaven, and wearing a black t-shirt and blue
jeans
There were several other white males in the newer model light or cream-colored van at the time of the incident.

Anyone with information about this crime is asked to contact the Tallahassee Police Department at (850) 891-4200 or Crime Stoppers at (850) 574-TIPS (8477). Remember, Crime Stoppers does not want your name, just your information. You could be eligible for a reward of up to $1000.

Crime Prevention Tips

1. Avoid walking alone, especially at night. Criminals often search for a person who is isolated from others. There is added safety in numbers.

2. In the event you see a person or persons that make you feel uncomfortable, get to an area where there are others, like a restaurant or store, and call police.

3. If you go out at night, leave with the same people that you went out with. Take care of each other and ensure everyone gets home safely.

4. Make sure you always tell someone where you are going, and when you expect to return. If you are overdue, someone is more likely to call police to search for you.

Crime Bulletin - Car Burglaries Main Campus

Posted by cfender on 10/28/09

The FSU Police Department is currently investigating nine auto burglaries that were reported between October 26 and October 27. The rate of burglaries reported is higher than usual and the FSUPD is taking proactive measures to identify, locate, and arrest the person or persons responsible. Students, faculty, and staff are asked to keep an extra eye out for suspicious persons loitering in parking lots and report them to FSUPD immediately. No persons have been approached, assaulted, or threatened in these cases.

If you have any information about suspicious activities, persons, or vehicles in FSU parking lots and facilities on or about October 26 and 27, 2009, please contact the FSU Police Department at 644 1234. If you wish to provide your information anonymously, you can contact Big Bend Crime Stoppers at 850 574 TIPS. The information you provide to Crime Stoppers may make you eligible for a reward of up to 1000 dollars. Remember that Crime Stoppers does not want your name, just your information.

Crime Prevention Tips

1. Park your vehicle in an area where people frequent if possible. The more potential witnesses are around, the greater the risk of getting caught to the criminal.

2. Call police anytime you see someone that you feel is acting in a suspicious manner. Explain the circumstances to the dispatcher and police will respond to evaluate the situation.

3. If you see a break in occurring, such as someone breaking the window of a car, call 911 immediately. Seconds count when police are responding.

4. Do not leave valuable items in your car or visible. The less attractive your car is to a burglar, the better.

5. Do not confront a suspicious person or burglar. A desperate criminal may use force to escape.

This information is brought to you as a public service of the FSU Police Department to help students, faculty, and staff make informed safety decisions. Remember, FSU Seminoles look out for one another, so if you see suspicious activities, call police immediately!
